The sweet, small bowl with an intense, matte blue glaze, while hard to capture in a photograph, has flecks of sparkle and a velvety finish. Created by San Francisco based ceramist Lisa Fleming. The striking Cobalt color prompted someone at a craft show last year to tell Lisa that Cobalt comes from outer space! Amusing, but is that true? Confirmed by a geologist that visited her booth later that same day. Cobalt does not occur naturally on earth but comes in the form of meteorites. We hope that is true as this glaze does feel magical and other worldly.

As all of Lisa’s work, this is made of Porcelain, thrown on the pottery wheel and fired to 2267 degrees. Each piece is one of a kind and every glaze is made from dry materials in Lisa's studio. The clay forms she creates are simple yet sophisticated, elegant, spare, almost austere. Lisa Fleming's  work is design driven, meant to be enjoyed by the eye and the heart( Not meant for food).

About the artisan

Lisa Fleming is a ceramist living and working in San Francisco. The porcelain forms she makes are simple yet sophisticated, elegant and design driven, but also incorporate organic elements, as is the nature of handmade things. She creates her pieces on a pottery wheel using porcelain clay, and fire in an electric kiln.  She makes her own glazes in her studio from dry materials. In her work, form takes precedence over function, and the pieces are primarily decorative. Quietly concentrating on shape, line, design, surface and color allows her to express her drive for order, beauty and form. Clay forms she prefers are simple yet sophisticated, elegant, spare, almost austere. She is inspired by the rough clays and studied imperfection of centuries of Japanese ceramics and mid-century Scandinavian ceramists.

Lisa is a mom of an 8 years old and who loves to be in the studio with her when possible and Lisa really treasures this time well spent together with her daughter.
